Unfortunately, today’s dogs and cats will suffer from diarrhea at some point in their lives. Whether they’ve consumed too many treats or got into the garbage, this super stressful and super messy bout of diarrhea can be a nightmare for both the pet and the owner!

LOOKING FOR QUICK RESCUE RELIEF?

I went straight to proactive veterinarian Doctor Karen Becker for help, who shared with me a recipe inspired by the great Juliette de Baïraclie Levy.

LABELED THE ULTIMATE, HOMEMADE DOG & CAT, ANTI-DIARRHEA SYRUP:

This easy-to-make herbal syrup will help protect, lubricate and heal most gastrointestinal upsets. The tannins in this mixture will help reduce inflammation, while coating the lining of an inflamed mucous membrane in your pet.

Montmorillonite Clay aka Bentonite, is an effective and powerful healing clay as it will absorb and remove toxins, heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals that may be floating around in your pet.

HERE’S WHAT YOU WILL NEED FOR INGREDIENTS:

1 tsp slippery elm powder
½ tsp Montmorillonite clay (Bentonite)
1 cup pure water

DIRECTIONS:

Mix 1 heaping teaspoon of slippery elm powder with ½ a teaspoon of montmorillonite clay in 1 cup of cold water. Bring to a boil while stirring. Turn down heat, stir and simmer 2 to 3 minutes.

Remove from heat and let it cool. For later use, you can refrigerate for up to 7days.

DOSAGES:

For dogs under 25 lbs, give 1 to 2 tbsp., 25-50 lbs, give 2 to 4 tbsp., 50 lbs and over, give ¼ to ½ cup. Dose 4 times a day.

For cats – use about 1/4 teaspoon of the anti-diarrhea syrup per every 10 pounds of body weight.

According to Dr. Becker, in cases of diarrhea from possible ingestion of something toxic, add ¼ teaspoon of activated charcoal when the syrup is freshly made and still warm. Stir well, and then allow to cool before administering.

Remember to always try and source clean organic ingredients when making this syrup and, if there is no improvement or if symptoms worsen, discontinue use of the syrup and consult your holistic veterinarian.
